Aloha, Big Island!

Aloha!
The Alonzi family is currently on the Big Island of Hawaii, enjoying a few days of much-needed R&R as the new year gets going.

Friday, 12/29

On Friday morning, we left Denver for Hawaii! The last time we were on this island was 2007, when Nick & I were really little, so it's really fun to be back! We even got some nice views of Mauna Kea (the big, dormant volcano that's nearly 14,000 feet tall and has snow on top) as we were flying in.
(It's visible here if you zoom in!)

Once we got in, we drove to our condo in Waikoloa Village. We got to see the sunset, and it was classic "golden hour" when we finally settled down in our place for the week.

That night, we went to Sansei (a sushi restaurant in the Queen's Shops in Waikoloa Village) for dinner, where we had sushi for dinner. Next, we went to Marble Slab Ice Cream shop to grab some dessert. Because of the time of year, we also got a quick picture or two by the Christmas trees that were still up :) We also tried to get into Lava Lava Beach Club, as per my friend Braeden's recommendation, but couldn't that night - though we did get a pretty great weather report (see the picture of the coconut) from the place!

SAT. 12/30
Our first morning was spent at Hapuna Beach! Although the original plan was to go to Mauna Kea Beach (right down the road) at 8 AM, we arrived at 8:45 or so and couldn't get in. Instead, we went over to Hapuna, where we built sand figures, boogie boarded (like a less intense version of surfing) and relaxed.

After Hapuna, we went to Kohala Burger and Taco for lunch. Everybody got fish tacos, but I swear the beach makes you just as hungry as a workout! (No pictures here.) We were all a little hot, so we got some Shave Ice at Avenue Ice Cream and Shave Ice next door. This place is cool too because you can get ice cream with your shave ice! The one you see pictured had Pineapple, Passion Fruit, and Strawberry Colada for the ice with macadamia nut ice cream (yum) below it!

We spent the afternoon at the pool, though mom and I took a stroll to A-Bay and "monkeyed around" on the outdoor gym equipment!

We went to Huggo's for dinner and got to watch the sunset. Everything was really good, including the fish special (my choice) and the view!

After dinner, we walked through Kona town and checked out the scene. We found a singer and I decided to hula dance! It was a fun experience, and I can't get the song stuck out of my head :)

More posts coming soon! Mahalo (thank you) if you take the time to read my blog posts :)
