Prague!

Ahoj! (Hi!)

What a magical weekend! On Friday morning, I headed to the airport for a flight to Prague with my friends Kaitlyn and Michelle! Kaitlyn and I took the train but got a little confused because we got off at the wrong terminal... Thankfully we had plenty of time and were able to get some Starbucks before the gate was released.

We took a taxi into town and checked into Hostel Santini for the weekend. It was centrally located (1 minute walk from St. Nicholas Church) and had everything we needed. The receptionist was friendly and helpful, and our room was nice! We went over to the ATM recommended by the hostel to pick up some cash for the weekend at a good exchange rate before heading to lunch. The restaurant we decided on was Krčma, a traditional (and very affordable) Czech pub! Kaitlyn and I tried the Pilsner Urquell beer, and all three of us tried a pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes. Delicious!
We started our sightseeing with Old Town Square. We saw the Jan Hus monument, Old Town Hall, Astronomical Clock, and the Church of St. Nicholas (the one in Old Town). Because we got there at the start of the hour, we also watched the clock show! It's very cute and worth a visit. After that, we walked to the Powder Tower and went up to get a great view of the city.
From there, we went through the New Town of Prague starting with the Municipal House, an Art Nouveau building. After, we walked up to Wenceslas Square and the National Opera.
As we headed back to the hostel, we stopped a couple times. The first was to pick up Trdelniks. They're delicious cinnamon-covered, Nutella-filled pastries (but unfortunately not "real" Czech cuisine). We decided to go into the Lego Museum and got to see lots of fun constructions! We walked back over Legi Most (a bridge) and got a wonderful view of Karluv Most (the Charles Bridge).
We took a break, then went to dinner at Kolkovna Celnice! We finished the night with a performance of Swan Lake at the Hybernia Theatre.
Saturday:
We started our Saturday with a visit to the Prague Castle, about a 15 minute walk from our hostel. We spent a few hours walking through the various buildings of the castle learning about the history and current uses of the complex. This included the lovely St. Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and an armor exhibition. I also really liked the Golden Lane area, which at one point housed Franz Kafka!
After exploring, we walked down to Mala Strana (lower town). My favorite part was the St. Nicholas Church! It was incredible and absolutely worth a stop!
Kaitlyn and I also picked up a small glass of Hot Wine (advertised all over the city). We weren't huge fans but figured we would try it.

Then, we went down to the Lennon Wall and ate lunch at the John Lennon Pub (note the yellow submarine in the door)!
After lunch, we walked back to Old Town Square to meet a tour group! We went on a free walking tour of the Old Town, New Town, and Jewish Quarter ("Josefov") with a guide named Lyle and learned so much! We ended at the Rudolfinium. I'm currently working on compiling my notes about all of Prague's history and sites, but really enjoyed getting a more in-depth look at the city.
Once we finished the walking tour, we met my former roommate Veva for dinner! It was so good to see her again and get to explore Prague a little more. We went to The Blue Duckling (and I had duck), then walked around a fun toy store!
We went to a show at the Black Theater of Jiri Srnec! I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend going to a show - it's fun, playful, and exciting! We finished the night at the Prague Beer Museum.
This morning (Sunday), we caught our flight back. I am back in Barcelona and would love to go back to Prague in the future. A few things I still want to do include going to the Jewish Museum, visit the Vysherad Castle, check out the Dancing House, and take a boat tour!

It's official - I love Prague and already want to go back!

Until next time,
Amy
